A meme has been circulating online that suggests a man accused of sexual battery could have committed it if he hadn’t been caught.
The meme, posted by an anonymous user on Tuesday, depicts a man holding his head and screaming at a woman as she is being choked.
The caption says: “She was on her knees with her mouth agape and pleading for mercy and you did not hear a thing.
You are guilty of sexual assault.
A number of users commented that the image was “too disturbing” and “not appropriate” to post.
But others called it a good meme to share on social media and a good illustration of the power of sexual harassment.
The term sexual battery, which has been used to describe an act of sexual violence, was first used by the British tabloid newspaper the Daily Mail in April 2016.
The newspaper reported that the woman, who is not named, had been assaulted on the London Underground in November 2013 and was “severely traumatized” after a train ride to the office of a tabloid publisher.
The Associated Press has reported that at least one person who said they were sexually assaulted on public transit in the U.K. was also sexually assaulted by a subway worker.
